Miedema is from the province of Drenthe and plays for Arsenal. However despite being the Dutch national team’s top scorer, and having won the Women’s Super League with Arsenal (whilst being top scorer), she was overlooked for the team of the year.

According to the Drents regional broadcaster, Miedema thinks that this is because she does not do enough to be ‘popular’, and because she posts too little on Facebook.
Born in Hoogeveen, Miedema grabbed the English title with her club Arsenal this year, became top scorer, chosen as the best player in England and played in the World Cup final. However, last week she did not get a place in the FIFAPRO team of the year at the FIFA gala in Milan.
In that team there was a place for the Dutch goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal. The Brazilian Marta Vieria and the American world champions Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe were named as the best attackers.
Miedema complains to Arseblog about the course of events. “We all know it’s about popularity and I don’t post that much on Instagram or Twitter,” she says. “That’s probably why it went wrong. To be honest, I don’t care much about individual prizes, but I think this is a joke.”
The international players’ union FIFPRO asked 3500 female football players from 40 different countries to vote for the team of the year. They chose four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers. The players with the most votes were given a place in the team of the year. Most football players voted for Alex Morgan.
