Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the incident occurred at the Haren train station, and that the victim was a 20-year-old woman from Groningen.
Train travel between Groningen Europapark and Assen was cancelled for hours on Saturday as a result of the accident. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., and normal train service resumed as 3 p.m. The NS used rail replacement buses to transport travellers during the closure.
The Dutch national broadcaster NOS reports that the station is currently under construction, but that it was unclear if that had anything to do with the accident. The police ruled out suicide and deemed the fatality a tragic accident. In 2017, 193 people committed suicide in the Netherlands by jumping in front of a train.
