Omrop Fryslan reports that around 10,000 connections to grid operator Liander were impacted. The company had cautioned about the possibility of a power outage due to the record-breaking heatwave in recent days, but it is not clear if that was the direct cause.
The outage began around 11 p.m. and lasted until about 3 a.m. in most places, and impacted cities and towns throughout the municipality, namely Sneek, Folsgare, Heeg, Hommerts, Jutrijp, Lippenhuizen, Oudega, IJsbrechtum, Makkinga, Hemrik and Offingawier.
Other areas in the province of Friesland were also affected, such as Franeker, Garyp, Sumar and Hallum. Power was back in those areas by 5:30, but power was still out in Nijega, Bakhuizen and Mirns as of Saturday morning – service was expected to be restored by 9:30.
