The national Social Insurance Bank releases a list of the most popular baby names across the Netherlands each year, so what are the top choices across the north?
Lieke was the most popular name for girls in all three northern provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland, but the most common boy’s name differed per province. In Groningen, the top boy’s name was Thijs, in Drenthe it was Daan and in Friesland, more baby boys were given the name Jesse than any other name.
In Groningen, the other popular girl’s names were Emma and Julia, and the other popular boy’s names were Daan and Luuk.
In Friesland, Hidde and Jurre were the second and third most common boy’s names, and Fenna and Tess were popular for baby girls.
Noud and Sem rounded out the top three boy’s names in Drenthe, and Lauren and Eva were the second and third most popular girl’s names.
Nationally, the most popular baby names were Lucas and Julia, which are new additions to the top names’ list. In 2017, the biggest names were Emma and Noah. There were 169,134 babies born in the Netherlands last year: 86,631 boys and 82,503 girls.
