Thousands of people visited Groningen’s Grote Markt during the Jouw Grote Markt Festival celebrating its completed renovation on Saturday.
As live music played throughout the day, people had the opportunity to explore the ABN Amro, Grand Theatre, The Market Hotel, and Vindicat buildings which opened their doors to the public. The latter Grote Markt landmark proved particularly popular as many visitors were intrigued to see what lies within the complex of the controversial student association. While the public was treated to great views of the city centre from the building’s large balconies, many couldn’t help but comment on the pungent smell of beer that permeated each floor.
Others wanting an even better vantage spot braved the 300-step climb up The Martini Tower, which also offered free entry, and were rewarded with a 360-degree view of the city.
In the evening the main stage was home to Broken Bass, Deejay Irie, Zoë Tauran, and finally DJ Tommy Green who mixed tracks until midnight.
The silent disco hosted in Groningen’s Town Hall was also a hit among the revellers both young and old.
