Dagblad van het Noorden reports that police officers fired multiple warning shots in Emmen when responding to a call about an altercation at café Groothuis on Stationsstraat in Emmen. A person in the café reportedly threatened multiple people with a gun.
Police spokesperson Anne van der Meer says that officers encountered the suspect in his car and requested that the driver pull over. The driver complied. Jan van Es, the owner of café Groothuis, says that a woman exited the vehicle, but the driver refused to get out. That is when the officers fired one warning shot. The woman was taken into police custody.
The driver then took off in the car, at which point the police fired several more warning shots in the direction of the vehicle. The armed suspect is still at large, but Van Der Meer says that he is known to the police. RTV Drenthe reports that the police set up a perimeter around the café to search the scene.
The police have not stated whether the incident on Sunday night was connected to an altercation at the Stationsplein in Emmen on Sunday morning where a gun was allegedly fired.
