A member of the Groningen student society Vindicat has been sentenced to 90 hours of community service for assaulting a fellow corps member during a party in December last year.
According to NU.nl, the case against a second suspect has been suspended. He denies any violent behaviour and wants three additional witnesses to be heard. His case will continue on 22 October.
Both suspects are 22 years old and appeared in court on Thursday morning. They were accused of kicking and beating another corps member. The victim sustained injuries to his nose and teeth and a concussion. The incident took place during a Vindicat festival last year.
The student association did not report the incident to the University of Groningen (RUG). Vindicat has thus failed to comply with agreements that have been made with the university, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the municipality in recent years after numerous incidents.
Due to their failure to notify the academic institutions, the RUG and the Hanze decided to withdraw financing for Vindicat’s committee grant for the 2017/2018 academic year.
