The closest most international students will come to either joining Vindicat, or owning property
Members of the Groningen student association Vindicat have developed their own variant of monopoly during the Coronavirus outbreak.
They have received permission from – and collaborated with, the game’s owner and producer. Identity Games were so enthusiastic that a variant of the board game has now been launched for eight cities in the Netherlands, with student societies, reports the GIC.
The idea of a student version of the old board game comes from Vindicat members Quinten van den Berg (22) and Lara Winter (24). They got the idea during their umpteenth game of monopoly that they played in their Corona quarantine.
They first wanted to make a Student-o-poly, which would cover all university cities. But in the end they came up with a version relevant just to Vindicat members.
They then contacted producer Identity Games, who was very enthusiastic and wanted to start immediately. Then they approached the eight student corporations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden, Groningen, Wageningen, Delft and Utrecht, all of which were open to collaboration.
In the game adapted for the students, questions are included that fit in with the world of the corps students. Such as: “You have not paid your child account. Go directly to start for your DUO money, otherwise you will be expelled and you have to go to prison “and” You have lost five first-year kilos because of your cycling equipment. You will receive a hundred euros for this achievement. ”
It is not yet known if any instances of Vindicat’s awful behaviour will make it into the game. In recent years, the organisation has seen several high-profile stories of ‘hazing’ rituals, including that new recruits were sent to hospital with head injuries (among other incidents). The student association has also come under fire following some of its members creating a ‘bang list’ of female members, and an article in the members magazine ‘De Ster’ that named a ‘slut of the summer’.
A full history of Vindicats’ misdeeds can be read (in Dutch) on nu.nl, however the actions of the society as a collection were deemed so bad that the University of Groningen and Hanzehogeschool pulled funding from the organisation in 2018.
