A fascinating glimpse into Groningen’s past
The city of Groningen is celebrating the fact that it has been exactly 75 years since it was liberated by Canadian troops. De Groningse Foto Doos (The Groninger Photo Box) has created a photo montage video to show what those few days were like, reports the GIC.
The video shows how seriously the city was damaged; Canadian troops advanced to Groningen from the south, and even fought running battles on the Grote Markt. Between April 13 and 16, 1945, the Canadian soldiers fought a fierce battle with the German occupying forces.
Groningen was one of the last places in The Netherlands to be liberated.
You can view the video on the Groninger Internet Courant’s website.
