The Vegter cookie factory in Hoogezand will be acquired by two different companies. Matzo factory Hollandia will be taken over production of the New Year’s Rolls. They will continue to be produced in Hoogezand, but 19 of the factory’s 24 employees will be let go.
Conservator Pieter Lettinga confirmed on Tuesday that Vegter’s assets would be split between Hollandia in Enschede and the Dicarono cookie factory in the Spanish city of Alicante. Hollandia will produce the regionally beloved New Year’s Rolls and the Spanish factory will take over production of the waffles and chocolates which Vegter sold because the rolls were seasonal products.
Hollandia will initially hire five of Vegter’s current employees to continue producing the rolls. Lettinga says that number could eventually rise. “They want to start slowly”, he says. “Production of the rolls will gradually get going in April. We will eventually need more employees, but that will be via a temp agency.”
