The move comes after Leeuwarden made its shopping streets ‘one-way’ last week
Pedestrians in Groningen are to be given much more space in the city center to assist with social distancing, reports RTV Noord. To this end, busy shopping streets will be completely transformed into pedestrian areas in the near future, with cycle routes to be closed between 12:00 and 19:00. These are some of the measures to promote the ‘one and a half meter society’ in the city center, which were presented this morning.
Groningen alderman Roeland van der Schaaf (PvdA) said this morning that there will be no obstacles in the pedestrian area in the city center, such as parked bicycles and displays..
Streets that are closed to bicycle traffic from noon include the Brugstraat, Vismarkt and Guldenstraat. However, the municipality wants to provide additional places to park bicycles.
The municipality also wants to give more space to cyclists, and make them wait less together at traffic lights: cyclists will get green lights at busy points to help with this.
