The Van Gogh Drenthe initiative, which saw the commemoration of Vincent van Gogh’s connection to the region in 2023, is set to continue following a year of positive outcomes. The Municipality of Emmen, along with other local authorities, has announced plans to extend the initiative into 2024 and beyond, with a focus on sustainability and growth.
Joint financial commitment and sustainability
The Emmen council, alongside the provinces of Drenthe, and the municipalities of Coevorden, and Hoogeveen, have allocated €200,000 for the year 2024 to support the Van Gogh Drenthe initiative. The funding is part of a collaborative effort to sustain the project, with annual contributions planned until 2027. The initiative is actively seeking additional funding sources, such as grants and private partnerships, to guarantee its long-term sustainability and the continued viability of its projects.
New centers and interactive experiences
The Van Gogh Drenthe 2024-2030 plan prioritizes both preserving existing attractions and expanding the visitor experience. Established sites like the Van Gogh House will remain, while new visitor centers and “inspiration points” are planned across the region.
These locations aim to educate visitors on Van Gogh’s life and work through exhibits and interactive experiences. Potential new centers include the Zweeloo church and Hoogeveen could see digital experiences. Additionally, the Drents Museum will showcase a dedicated Van Gogh gallery within its upcoming “Labyrinthia” collection presentation.
Looking ahead
The inaugural year of Van Gogh Drenthe in 2023 marked 140 years since Vincent van Gogh’s first visit to Drenthe. Over 135 local initiatives, including exhibitions and educational programs, attracted approximately 200,000 visitors.
Around 10,000 children in Drenthe received education about Van Gogh’s life and art in schools during this period. Encouraged by the successes of the previous year, stakeholders have reiterated their dedication to safeguarding and promoting Van Gogh’s cultural influence for generations to come.
The Van Gogh Drenthe initiative aims to solidify Van Gogh’s connection to the region beyond a temporary project. By offering immersive experiences, fostering education, and collaborating with local communities, the initiative hopes to inspire future generations and enrich the cultural landscape of Drenthe, Groningen, and Friesland.
