Van der Velde book store in central Groningen re-opened on Saturday, October 29, following a full renovation. The store will be run by Ad Peek Van der Velde, a member of the business family that founded the bookshop chain in 1892.
The emblematic establishment at Akerkhof 45, which stopped trading about 3 months ago because of the urgent need for makeover, has been revamped in chic English style with lots of wood, magnificent staircases, and oodles of green, black and red accents. In addition, the store has been considerably expanded and brings in a new concept, with a great deal of emphasis on second-hand books and English-language literature.
The new lines are products that will attract customers in this expat, student and tourist area. All of the display space in the basement is devoted to English-language literature, including many new titles and non-fiction section intended for international students.
For second-hand books, both in English and Dutch, head to the upper floor. Coffee and other drinks are also available, making it possible for the visitors to communicate with fellow bookworms and to establish relationships with those who work at the store.
