SHINE have developed an innovative way of making medical isotopes without a nuclear facility
The economy of Veendam and the eastern part of the province of Groningen is to receive a strong boost with the arrival of a large factory, owned by the American isotope manufacturer SHINE. The new factory should provide skilled work for two hundred people, who will be helping the company to produce cancer-related radioactive treatment.
SHINE makes medical isotopes, basic substances that are needed in research into, among other things, cancer and its treatment. Thanks to a revolutionary technique, SHINE makes its isotopes without a nuclear reactor isotopes. This makes the production process safer, cleaner and more reliable, says the company.
The European branch of SHINE will be built from 2023 in the municipality of Veendam. Logistical opportunities in the east of Groningen were the deciding factor: Veendam came out on top after looking at more than 50 possible business locations in various European countries.
