Insurance company Univé has received more than 100 claims of damage caused by the heavy rains on Sunday.

According to Univé, which has the most clients in Groningen and Drenthe, most of the claims came from homeowners in Drenthe. The majority of the Drenthe claims were filed in Assen. Dagblad van het Noorden reports that several claims were filed in Groningen.

The insurance company says that most of the claims reported damage to roofs, walls and floors. Several vehicles were also damaged by the severe weather. “We don’t send an agent to assess every single claim. We ask clients to submit photos and then we determine on a case by case basis how to proceed”, says Univé’s Ellen de Jong.

Streets across the northern provinces briefly turned into creeks as torrential rainfall caused flash floods. Up to 67 millimetres fell in a matter of hours in several places in Drenthe, which is more than the province typically gets in the entire month of May.
