Two patients suffering from liver cancer saw their tumours disappear following treatment
After two patients with advanced liver cancer were found to be cancer-free and after using cannabis oil, the UMCG will start researching the effect of this oil in patients with liver cancer, reports the GIC. The researchers want to find out whether cannabis oil has a possible anti-cancer effect and can cause liver tumours to shrink.
According to the UMCG, the experiences of two patients have prompted the study. Both patients had advanced liver cancer and started using cannabis oil. Now, 2 and 5 years after their diagnosis, respectively, the tumors have completely disappeared.
Laboratory research has shown that cannabis can inhibit the growth of liver cancer cells. But a possible anti-cancer effect of cannabis oil in patients cannot yet be explained, because no scientific research has yet been done on patients, according to the UMCG.
This study is being conducted with patients with advanced liver cancer for whom no treatment is possible except for symptom control. A total of 20 patients can participate. The study will take approximately three years.
