A travelling outdoor cinema will be touring Groningen and Drenthe in 2025.
Nomad Cinema owner Roland Breteler told The Northern Times that the concept consists of a mobile open-air cinema wandering between the city of Groningen and the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.
“The Nomad comes with 200 headphones, a big screen, and popcorn,” Breteler told The Northern Times.
There will be 60 seats available to be booked or you can either choose to sit in front of this row on your own picnic blanket or behind this row on aseat you brought yourself. You’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks as well.
Breteler explained that he will screen an “eclectic selection of films” including classics like Jaws (to be screened at the Hoornse Plas) as well as recent Hollywood and cult classics. Every feature will be preceded by a short film as well.
“I’m working on several film and location combination ideas where the two will enhance each other,” Breteler said.
Since it’s out of office time for many film distributors Roland can’t be specific about all the plans yet but he has some ideas.
“The Bikeriders in Tivoli open-air theatre during Assen TT 2025, a movie about a boy being lost in the wilderness, a re-release of a classical Hogeland movie, hopefully with some of the cast present, and of course Jaws at the Hoornseplas,” he said. He’s also working on a tennis-related screening.
As for the locations Roland has a few listed so far. In the city of Groningen: Sterrebos, Pioenpark, Hoornseplas, and the Biotoop in Haren. Out in the provinces: Menkemaborg, Verhildersum, Fraeylemaborg, Op Ewsum, Havezate Roden and Tivoli Assen open-air theatre. The ‘Borgen’ (stronghold) are especially perfect for it and if you haven’t been to one yet, Breteler describes them as “sort of castle-like places with a moat, and botanical garden. They’re very much fairytale-like locations.” Suggestions for other future locations are also very much welcome.
The subtitles for the movies will mostly be in English with some Dutch, depending on the location and movie. Roland explains he’s also working with a system for the hard of hearing.
As for the location profiles, these will be published in a month, including information on how to get there by public transport, accessibility for wheelchairs and other helpful info.
Screenings will only be postponed if there’s a yellow or red weather warnings and there will be biodegradable rain ponchos, blankets, and mosquito repellent spray available if needed.
Roland explains he will be doing some test screenings at the end of this summer and plans to make the Nomad Cinema a returning event even after the summer of 2025.
