Train services between Groningen Central Station and Groningen Europapark are expected to remain suspended until Thursday afternoon following a track subsidence discovered early Sunday morning. The issue stems from construction near the new Esperantotunnel, a cycling underpass, where dam wall damage and sand erosion caused instability beneath the tracks.
ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, is investigating the damage and working on a recovery plan. “We aim to have the trains running by Thursday afternoon, but safety comes first,” a spokesperson told RTV Noord.
In the meantime, buses are operating every five minutes between the two stations. The NS has also suspended extra commuter trains during peak hours between Groningen Europapark and Assen, according RTV Drenthe. Train services between Zwolle and Groningen terminate at Groningen Europapark, with no direct routes available to the city center.
Arriva regional trains are also impacted, with some services limited to Groningen Europapark. Further complications have arisen from logistical challenges as trains are stranded at De Vork rail yard. This has led to cancellations on other lines, including routes between Warffum and Groningen and Leeuwarden and Sneek.
Passengers are advised to check the NS travel planner for updates as schedules are revised daily.
