The disruption of train service between Bad Nieuweschans and Leer, Germany, will continue until at least late August 2025, due to extensive construction on the German side, according to Arriva. The affected route, suspended since February 2024, has forced commuters and travelers to use replacement buses, significantly lengthening travel times.
Arriva spokespersons confirmed that major works include the construction of new stations, track upgrades, and the rebuilding of the Friesenbrücke. Despite plans to complete the infrastructure by August 24, 2025, the date for resuming train service remains uncertain. Even if the construction wraps on schedule, drivers will need to familiarize themselves with the new tracks before regular operations can resume.
Meanwhile, buses will continue serving the route. Direct express buses between Groningen and Leer operate without transfer, while stop services connect Bad Nieuweschans, Weener, and Leer, accommodating wheelchairs but excluding bicycles and mobility scooters. Adjustments in departure times for these buses will also occur starting October 10, 2024, to account for new border checks causing longer travel durations.
Travelers can use their OV-chipkaart or other valid tickets to pay for the bus services, with the option to purchase tickets at Arriva’s service points in Groningen or at Leer’s station.
