Too Good to Go: app fights Groningen food waste

An app called Too Good To Go is launching in Groningen, offering users steep discounts on food and drinks that would otherwise be thrown out from local bakeries and coffee shops.

Translation by Traci White

The app, called Too Good to Go, was developed in Denmark in 2015 and has been available in the Netherlands since 2018. The app’s objective is to fight food waste by providing a platform for stores to sell their surplus food and drinks.

Melvin de Groot, a Groningen native who works as a business developer for Too Good To Go in the Netherlands, says that app users pay as little as one-third of the original price for items from local eateries. Users can see which bakeries, coffee shops and other businesses are contributing in the app, and then pick up a “Magic Box” containing a mystery mix of items from their preferred spot.

Establishments in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague already work with the app to provide food and drinks, and Groningen is now getting in on the fight against food waste. The Groninger Internet Courant writes that popular spots like Bakkerscafé, Bakkerij Blanche, Denderz, Coffee Break and Stadsbakker Meijer have already agreed to contribute to the app. Too Good To Go is up and running in eight countries across Europe.
