Lady Luck certainly seemed to be smiling on the north during the New Year’s Post Code Lottery: cities and towns in Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland won big, including a 53.9-million-euro jackpot in Glimmen.

In the Frisian city of Joure, residents in the 8501 JV post code who bought a ticket will be sharing 100,000 euros. The post code includes houses on the Dr Eeltje Halbertsmastraat between 31 and 55. The more tickets any given household bought, the bigger their share of the winnings – the exact distribution of the money will be announced in late January. Residents of the Oldergaardestraat in Assen also struck it rich: four residents living in the 9402 PH post code were presented a check for 250,000 euros to split on live television.
But the biggest winner by far was in the village of Glimmen in the far south of the province of Groningen. Residents living in the 9756 AK post code won the jackpot of 53.9 million euros: 27 million euros will go to five winning ticket holders, ranging from 2.7 million to 8 million. The other residents of the village, which has around 1,000 inhabitants, who bought a ticket will be splitting an additional 27 million euros. The precise amount going to each household will be made known during a block party on Friday.
Last year, the mega jackpot of 53.9 million euros, which is known as Post Code Topper, went to residents of the village of Eastermar in Friesland, the birthplace of super model Doutzen Kroes. As the name suggests, the Post Code Lottery winners are chosen based on post code: any inhabitants living within a specific post code are eligible to win money, but only if they buy a ticket.
