While the temperature on Monday 16 May will stay in the mid-20s, the Royal Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is expecting thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind all over the Northern provinces and the rest of the country.
Drenthe has issued a code yellow because of possible hailstorms and strong winds between 16:00 and 19:00. KNMI urged caution since winds could reach 60 kilometers per hour and make driving and other outdoor activities difficult.
KNMI’s meteorologists also warned the public to stay away from open water and open areas and to not seek refuge under trees.
Regardless of the stormy weather expected early this week, it seems like summer has already arrived in the Netherlands. As RTV Drenthe weatherman Roland van der Zwaag declared: “We are really getting a different type of weather with high temperatures this week. You are now seeing those summer cumulus clouds and today the first local thunderstorm. Those are signs of the transition to summer.”
High temperatures are expected across the three Northern provinces this week, with peaks on Wednesday and Thursdays, when meteorologists expect to see up to 28 or 29 degrees. Friday and the weekend should be cooler and could bring more rain.
