Former world and Olympic swimming champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo has formally retired from athletics, NOS reports. Kromowidjojo, born and raised in the village of Sauwerd north of Groningen, says she wants now to focus on a career in the social sector.
“Swimming will always remain my passion, but not on a professional level anymore,” Kromowidjojo wrote in a post on Instagram.

Kromowidjojo is one of the most decorated Dutch swimmers, with over 40 world, European and Olympic titles to her name. The 31-year-old claimed the first of her international titles at the 2008 European Aquatics Championship in Eindhoven where she claimed individual and team gold, a feat she repeated later that year at the Summer Olympics in Beijing
