A teenage girl drowned in the Loomeer swimming pond near the village of Schoonloo in Drenthe on Saturday.
The girl, who was born in 2006, disappeared in the late afternoon. A bystander had just pulled the unconscious girl out of the water when emergency services arrived at the scene on Saturday.
RTV Drenthe reports that medical personnel on the scene immediately began trying to resuscitate the girl. She was transported to the hospital by helicopter, but doctors were unable to save her life because she had been underwater for too long.
Like many swimming ponds in Drenthe, Loomeer is a former sand excavation site. The pond is relatively shallow: the maximum depth is typically only two metres, depending on the groundwater levels.
