Despite a new strong lockdown being imposed across the Netherlands, Friesland saw a large rise in the number of new Coronavirus cases this weekend. On Sunday, 322 new cases were tallied by the GGD Fryslân: setting a new daily record. As reported by the Omrop Fryslân.
The old record was 294 new cases in one day, on October 12 during the ‘second wave’, which had been artificially inflated by a counting error. The most new infections occurred in the Gemeente Súdwest-Fryslân, around the city of Sneek (66). Leeuwarden came next with 51 new infections, with the Gemeente Waadhoeke another hotspot with 30 new cases.
One death was reported in the Province, in the Gemeente Smallingerland (around Drachten). Two more people have been admitted to hospital over the weekend: in Gemeente Waadhoeke and Gemeente Ooststellingwerf.
Across the Netherlands the RIVM recorded 13,066 new infection on Sunday, up 784 on the day before. In Groningen 273 new cases were confirmed on Sunday (up 38 more compared to Friday). Drenthe saw 293 new cases on Sunday, down from Friday’s total of 35.
