Friesland is experiencing a surge in tourism this summer, thanks to the beautiful weather and the start of the school holidays. With numerous events taking place and visitors flocking to the region, businesses are reporting a significant boost.
Froukje van Keimpema, who operates a ferry and tea garden between Vegelinsoord and Akkrum, has seen a dramatic increase in visitors. “In April, we had just 500 visitors. Now, in a single week, we’re welcoming over 1,150 people. It’s been a fantastic week,” she told Omrop Fryslân. While she’s optimistic about the season, Van Keimpema is cautious: “It all depends on the weather in the coming months. We usually see a lot of older visitors in September, so I’m hopeful.”
Jelmer Dijkstra, from the camping and marina De Drijfveer in Akkrum, has also experienced a busy summer. Despite some rainy days, the boat rental business has been thriving. “Even when the weather is poor, people still enjoy sailing. They simply put on a raincoat and head out. Of course, there were days when we had to keep the boats docked due to heavy rain, but overall, we’re very satisfied,” he said.
The popularity of events like the Sneekweek and the skûtsjesilen has also contributed to the increase in visitors. These traditional sailing events draw large crowds to Friesland and boost the local economy.
For local businesses and residents, the influx of tourists is a welcome sight. “We spend all winter preparing our boats and the marina,” said Dijkstra. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see everyone enjoying themselves during the summer. This is what summer in Friesland is all about.”
With its picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and numerous activities, Friesland is proving to be a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. As the summer continues, it’s expected that the province will continue to enjoy a busy season.
