Students demand solutions at Xior apartments that cook their occupants

The Xior studios at the Reitdiephaven cost up to 900 euros per month, and temperatures inside can reach 40 or even 50 degrees centigrade

Residents of the Xior student studio building (NIDOflat) at the Reitdiephaven in Groningen, where the temperature can rise to 40 or even 50 degrees during a warm period, will lodge an objection with the owner of the residential tower. The Socialist Party in Groningen will also take up the issue at the city council, reports the GIC.

According to the residents, who are mostly International students, it is unbearable in the residential tower during the heat. The NIDOflat building has 700 apartments, and rents of 680 euros per month for 21 square meters and 900 euros per month for 32 square meters.

The SP fraction in the Groningen city council will ask questions about the issue to the municipal executive of Groningen, not only because of the extreme heat, but also because of the ridiculous price point of the studios.

In Monday’s Dagblad van het Noorden, alderman Roeland van der Schaaf (PvdA) washed his hands of the issue, saying that the municipality of Groningen has no influence on rents. Van der Schaaf went on to say that the amount of the rent is legally framed and a municipal council has no influence on this.

He does, however, point to the option of tenants to submit complaints against a landlord to a Reporting Center Undesirable Rental Behavior.
