The huge Coronavirus testing centre was only open for a few months

The JOVD student organisation in Groningen has called for the Gemeente and RUG to transform the enormous ‘XL’ Coronavirus testing facility at the Meerstad in the east of the City into emergency housing. As reported by the RUG.
The giant structure is due to be removed on Sunday, but is currently empty. Large numbers of (particularly) International Students are still homeless more than a month into the academic year, with many living in hotels. Tom Boer, chair of the JOVD, says: “the conversion of the ‘XL’ testing centre to temporary housing could really help to lessen this problem”.
“There must be creative solutions to provide temporary housing”, says Boer, “a few years ago a tent city sprung up, and with those memories fresh in the mind it would seem strange to turn down this space during a huge housing shortage.”
