Members of the student association Vindicat collected around 150,000 euros on Sunday, during the Amsterdam marathon. Around five hundred members raised money for the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), for research into immune therapy for cancer.
Of the five hundred students, around twenty ran the marathon. Most of them ran 8 kilometers in the capital of the Netherlands. On Monday morning, 148,000 euros had been collected. That is considerably more than the target amount of one-hundred thousand. A striking donation was from the student association itself. “Smoking fines Vindicat Atque Polit” made a donation of no less than 7000 euros.
This may well be an example of the student association trying to make its image more approachable, following several high-profile instances over the last few years that have seen the 200-year old association associated with violence, possibly hindering the police investigation into said violence and having its ties cut with both universities.
At the start of this academic year, the student association unveiled a shiny new recruitment video, with the message “you may have heard of us before, but that was the past”. The video shows suitably attired people participating in the associations activities.
