The number of stork chicks spotted in nests across the province of Friesland is much higher this year than in 2017.

During an annual inventory, inspectors used a boom lift to check how many chicks were located inside the elevated stork nests in Friesland. In the town of Beetsterzwaag alone, the numbers were much higher: there were 102 young storks spotted in the town in the east of the province. There were 23 nests and 31 chicks in Earnewâld this year, and 10 chicks were found in Tytsjerk.
The Leeuwarder Courant reports that this year’s results were much better than the 2017 inventory: nearly half of the chicks did not survive the season. There were only 30 living chicks ringed last year, and 28 deceased chicks were found in Beetsterzwaag. The low numbers were attributed to unusually rainy conditions.
This year’s inventory was nearly double the 2016 total: there were 57 chicks counted in the province that year.
