The global ‘Orange the World’ campaign to stop violence against women started in Groningen last month.
The campaign, which is organised by Orange the World globally, takes place annually from the 25th of November to the 10th of December and draws attention to violence against women and girls as well as pointing out several facts about violence against women.
For example, one in three women is confronted with violence and 73% of women experience sexual harassment. According to Orange the World, there are more than 20,000 female victims of sexual violence in Groningen alone. One in ten female students is raped and every eight days a woman is killed in the Netherlands as a result of violence.
During the campaign, buildings and landmarks will be illuminated in orange in more than 100 countries to draw attention to these facts. In addition, exhibitions, demonstrations, and other activities are organised.
There are also activities in Groningen. On Sunday 24th November, there was a Rose Campaign where roses were handed out by the organisation Zonta to passers-by on the Werkmanbrug to create awareness about violence against women. On December 9th an interactive lecture on the book Silence Pain by Janine Meins was held at the University of Groningen.
