The protest is this evening
A maximum of 800 demonstrators are welcome on the Grote Markt this evening, says the Gemeente Groningen. The Grote Markt will be hosting a ‘Solidarity Sit In’, in protest at various systemic racism in place around the world. As reported by the GIC.
The municipality wants the activists to keep 1.5 meters apart at all times. According to a spokeswoman for the municipality, it is possible to admit 800 protesters to the Grote Markt, while keeping sufficient distance.
According to the municipality, the organisers of the demonstration itself must ensure that it does not get too busy. “If more than 800 people come, they must communicate that the Grote Markt is full and that others must turn around,” said the spokeswoman for the municipality. Incidentally, the demonstration may only take place on the Grote Markt and the Vismarkt cannot be used as an overflow.
The spokeswoman does not want to anticipate a bigger crowd yet. “We have made very good agreements with the organisation. The starting point remains that 1.5 meters. A demonstration must always be safe, but there is now extra attention for the safety of the demonstrators themselves. ”
Eventually, the municipality could intervene if the demonstration gets out of hand.
The organization of the demonstration previously called on everyone to come alone if you are not sick. You must wear a mouth mask and preferably also bring disinfectant gel. The protest lasts until about half past seven.
