De Vries had suffered a puncture in his Mercedes, but fought back to place eighth and win the title

On Sunday afternoon Friesland gained its first motor racing champion as Nyck de Vries clinched the title at Berlin’s Formula E Grand Prix, reports the Omrop Fryslân. De Vries needed to finish in eighth position or higher to win the Championship, but thanks to a leaking tire sat in 22nd position for part of the race.
De Vries, who was born in Sneek, started in thirteenth place and swiftly made his way up the rankings again, chasing down fellow Dutch driver Robin Frijns.
“I’m speechless, and quite emotional”, said De Vries, “it’s been a heavy season with lots of highs and lows. In the end it came down to the last race and we were in luck. In the end I just wanted to bring the car home safely.”
De Vries also won the Formula 2 Championship in 2019, before stepping up to Formula E and racing for Mercedes. It’s no surprise, then, that racing insiders are predicting a step up to Formula 1 in the coming seasons.
