As the city of Groningen becomes more international, its food scene seems to be keeping pace. The latest new addition to Groningen’s culinary offering is Smaakaron, a macaron patisserie which is planning to open in April 2019.

Alvaro Dos Anjos, who is originally from Brazil and trained in London, has been selling macarons in the city for years, and in April 2019, he will be opening up a patisserie at Oude Ebbingestraat 46.
According to Smaakaron employee Gerben van Dijken, no specific date has been confirmed for the opening, but they are aiming for this spring. “First we are planning to move the production kitchen, after that we are going to focus on the shop.”
Since 2015, Dos Anjos has been creating a wide range of flavours of macarons, which are meringue-based cookies that are often brightly coloured and include a cream or jam-like filling. Dos Anjos sets himself apart with 20 creative flavour combinations, including mango and lime, guava and mascarpone, pistachio and apricot, and quince and lavender.
For those among us who have the new year’s resolution of cutting down on sugar, OOGST Groningen reports that Smaakaron also offers sugar- and gluten-free treats. The patisserie also creates boldly decorated cakes which prominently feature their signature macarons.
