Groningen’s nightlife promises fun and exploration for all. However, for many women, the reality is starkly different. Going out in the city often comes with the risk of assault. So, what’s going on?
Local media outlet Sikkom delved further into the issue documenting a number of experiences it collected through a survey it conducted earlier this year that revealed that many young women avoid going out in Groningen at night due to sexual harassment.
Out of 1,231 respondents, 61% reported being assaulted or groped in the past year. More than half experienced such behaviour at least three times while out in the city. It affects men too, but women are the primary targets.
