Residents of the corner of Gouverneursplein and Sint Jacobsstraat in Leeuwarden were awakened by two loud bangs around 4 am on Wednesday, March 30th, reports the Leeuwarden Courant.
It appears that two unidentified men, seen leaving the area on a black scooter by several witnesses, set up an explosion to damage an ATM machine that was installed about a year ago on the façade of tanning salon Sunday’s.
The Leeuwarden police are still looking for the suspects and haven’t confirmed whether any money was actually stolen.
The explosion has severely damaged the corner building, completely shattering the windows of the tanning salon, and causing severe destruction inside as well.
For now, the Governeursplein has been closed off, pending investigations by the fire brigade and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD).
