A second wind farm will be built in the waters north of the Wadden island Schiermonnikoog. The wind farm will join the Gemini farm, which is located roughly 56 kilometres offshore. The new wind farm will include 140 wind turbines which will generate 700 megawatts when it comes online in 2026.
The plans for the new wind farm are described in detail in the government report called “Roadmap for wind energy at sea 2030”. The report states that the current coalition wants to prioritise building more wind turbines offshore. At least 40 percent of all energy used in the Netherlands in 2030 should come from sustainable sources.
The offshore wind farm currently produces 4.5 gigawatts, and by 2030, that output should increase to 11.5 gigawatts.
A massive wind farm will also be built 80 kilometres offshore from Ijmuiden in North Holland which should be able to produce 4 gigawatts. Another North Holland town, Petten, should also be getting a wind farm offshore that can produce 1.4 gigawatts. The plans call for at least one additional wind farm to be built elsewhere off the Dutch coast.
