Schiermonnikoog border shifts, Friesland wants land from Groningen

The eastern side of the Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog has shifted and is now technically within the border of the province of Groningen.

According to Dagblad van het Noorden, the province of Friesland wants to discuss changing the provincial borders so that the entire island remains within Friesland. Schiermonnikoog is inching its way east over time: in 2006, the Frisian/Groningen border was adjusted due to the shifting island sands.

Satellite imagery shows that the island has yet again crossed the new border lines over the past 12 years, but it is not clear how much of the island is now technically in the province of Groningen. If the border between the provinces runs through the island, emergency response could become trickier due to a lack of clarity on who is responsible.

Dagblad van het Noorden is running a poll to see if readers think that the Wadden Island should officially become part of Groningen rather than Friesland. What are your thoughts? Cast your vote here.
