My mask protects you
The University of Groningen (RUG), Groninger Museum and the University Medical Center (UMCG) in Groningen are all working together to organise a timely competition: who can designs the most beautiful, original, or creative face mask?
The face mask is increasingly becoming a part of daily life, despite Dutch government resistance in making wearing one a requirement for being in public. On the street you can already see them in different colors, although moody black and sterile white predominate. But they can be a chance to show off your personality, XD-Art Projects, the Groninger Museum, the UMCG and the University.
The organisers have also made various sources of inspiration available. For example, physician-microbiologist Dr. Edwina Doting (UMCG / RUG) wrote a paper about the dangers of micro-organisms and how to prevent infections, with images of viruses and bacteria.
A special handout has been made for the Mondo Mendini exhibition in the Groninger Museum, with which you can view selected works and receive tips for making your own. The exhibition can also be viewed in the museum’s free 360-degree environment. There is also a special flyer with inspiration images and a text by Steven Kolsteren, former head of education at the Groninger Museum about virus and mythology as a source of inspiration for art.
Everyone can register for the design competition until Monday 3 August. The mouth and nose masks can be made of all kinds of materials, and entrants must send in a photo of the mask before Sunday 9 August (11:59 p.m.). You also have to keep the original masks.
The best three photos will be shown in the studio of the Groninger Museum from Friday 14 August. In addition, they will be published on the Facebook pages of the Groninger Museum, UMCG, the University of Groningen and XD-Art Projects.
