From September 2022, the University of Groningen will have a second bachelor’s programme available at its Campus Fryslân in Leeuwarden. ‘Data Science and Society’ fits in with Campus Fryslân’s general aims to offer courses centred around global issues, and this course will look into “the societal implications of the use, collection, and maintenance of large data sets”, per the University and Province of Friesland.
The other Bachelor’s course at Campus Fryslân, ‘Global Responsibility and Leadership’ has been rated as a ‘top course’ by the Elsevier Keuzegids, whilst the current Master’s course ‘Sustainable Entrepreneurship’ has also been well received by students.
There are now 76 undergraduate students at the Campus, much more than in its first year of operation (26) but a little lower than expectations; likely due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Piet Bouma of the RUG says: “the growth is there, but the build-up process will take longer than the five years we originally thought. The new programme ‘Data Science and Society’ is a really big win for higher education in the North.”
