Groningen – After a protest against new Corona measures on Sunday afternoon took place without complications, a group of young rioters took over Grote Markt in the evening. They were behaving in a disorderly manner, lighting fireworks and detaching bikes from bike racks, as reported by Sikkom.
The situation got quickly out of control when police officers started getting hit by fireworks. The police decided to clear out Grote Markt shortly after 21:00, and Mayor Schuiling issued an emergency order stating that anyone finding themselves in the Groningen Centrum area had to leave, keep away until 5:00 on Monday morning, and be ready to meticulously follow police instructions.
It has been reported that a call to riot was circulating on social media earlier in the day.
