The bridge is part of the Blauwestad development
The longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Europe is now located in Groningen, between Winschoten and Blauwestad, in the east of the province of Groningen.
The iconic bridge is 800 meters long and is named after the former mayor of Oldambt Pieter Smit, who died in 2018. The bridge was officially opened on Monday. Because of Coronavirus measures, this was not done physically, but with a special video.
The bridge is 800 meters long, 3.5 meters wide and consists of four combined bridges. The wooden bridge crosses the Winschoterdiep, the A7, the ecological zone and the Oldambtmeer. Cyclists and walkers can get on and off the bridge at three places.
