Possibly the best landscape in the Netherlands
Tourists from across the world are beginning to discover the North, rather than simply sticking to the West of the Netherlands. This is certainly born out in the province of Drenthe: last year 1.2 million foreign tourists came to the province: a growth of seven percent compared to the year before, as reported by RTV Drenthe.
People from Germany and Belgium in particular like to come to Drenthe: they made up 85 percent of all foreign overnight stays.
Yet it is still mainly Dutch people who spend their holidays in the Province. Last year Dutch tourists booked six million overnight stays; an increase of 4 percent, while there was a decrease of 10 percent nationwide. Drenthe now is one of the three most popular domestic holiday destinations in the Netherlands. Tourists are drawn by the landscape, several natural parks, and the archaeologically important ‘Hunebedden’ neoliths.
The province is especially popular with campers. In recent years there has been a downward trend in the camping sector in Drenthe, but the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands show an increase of 12 percent.
