There have been several sightings in recent months
The board of the province of Drenthe has decided to make € 50,000 available for preventive measures for sheep farmers to protect their animals against wolves. Together with the sheep farmers, the board of the province of Drenthe wants to work ‘on a comprehensive approach in the coming period’, says the Province.
Provincial Deputy Henk Jumelet: “We have listened carefully to the concerns and needs that exist among the sheep farmers. We understand these concerns, while at the same time we have to deal with the arrival of the wolf as a protected animal species. There isn’t yet an established wolf in Drenthe, but we still want to start with a so-called predecessor scheme. In doing so, we meet the urgent demand for financial support for sheep farmers, who want to purchase wolf-resistant grids, among other things. And we are also gaining experience with sheep farmers, in taking preventive and protective measures”.
The Commission has decided to set up an area committee that will implement the idea. At a later stage, the committee will work with the province to prepare a comprehensive approach that will come into play when a wolf is actually established in Drenthe.
