On Tuesday afternoon, a small protest against Islamophobia and fascism was held on the Nieuwstad in Leeuwarden.
The protestors told Omrop Fryslân that their objective was to take a stand against the normalization of extreme right wing ideas and public comments.
The protest, which attracted around 30 participants, was prompted in response to a letter sent out across the United Kingdom in March calling for “Punish a Muslim Day” on 3 April.
Marrit Anne, a Frisian Muslim woman who organized the event, felt it was necessary to make a statement to counter the everyday racism which she has personally experienced. Anne says she was a little bit disappointed by the low turnout, but she says that she intends to continue organizing similar events in the future.
