The postal worker kept the missing packages at their home
Translated by Matthijs van Houten
A PostNL delivery person appears to have ‘disappeared’ around 3,000 letters and packages. All of the mail was intended for addresses in the city of Groningen, in the postal code area 9721T and 9721G (Helpman). The mail deliverer has since been fired.
The parcels and letters were found at the delivery worker’s home, according to a PostNL spokesperson. In total, there were four large roll containers full of mail.
Things started to snowball when PostNL received several complaints from people who missed mail. “People reported that certain items of mail had never arrived.” This caused them to mount an investigation into the missing items. Over the course of a typical weekday, PostNL delivers around 800,000 parcels and over seven million letters within Benelux.
Fired immediately
After the discovery, the delivery person was fired with immediate effect. It is not known why they withheld the pieces of mail.
The thousands of letters and packages were sorted by PostNL in Assen last Friday. The mail items will be delivered this week with an accompanying letter. If packages do not fit through the letterbox, the doorbell will be rung, to make sure that everything is received in good order.
