Polish man and woman, both 33, have been arrested in connection with the death of a 60-year-old cyclist found early Tuesday near Smilde, Drenthe police reported. The victim was discovered on Boerenlaan, just outside the village, after having been reported missing hours earlier.
The cyclist had set out on a ride but failed to return home. His family reported him missing around 10:30 p.m., prompting a public alert via Burgernet that included his description. Shortly before 3 a.m., police and family members discovered the man’s body along Boerenlaan.

Police suspect a hit-and-run collision, noting that an auto mirror and other evidence pointing to a collision were found near the scene. The two suspects were later apprehended in Beilen, where authorities also located a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the cyclist’s death.
