Dozens of police raided a rave party that was held in Groningen on Saturday evening in defiance of coronavirus restrictions on large gatherings. Over a thousand revelers from across the city attended the event in the Noorderplantsoen park, the news site Sikkom reports.
Large crowds flocked to the rave even though it had not been publicized in advance. According to Sikkom, the atmosphere was, in general, friendly, and the police let the party go on for some time but broke it up at midnight.
About a dozen nightclubs in Groningen planned to participate in the De Nacht staat op – or ‘the night rises’ – campaign on Saturday in protest of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, but had to shut their doors at 10pm after being threatened with heavy fines.
