An investigation is underway after a drugs lab was found at an abandoned potato starch factory in Veendam Monday morning, police say.
The Groningen police responded to the site in the Zuidwending neighborhood around 7:20 a.m. after receiving reports of disturbances, reports RTV Noord. Inside the factory, officers found the lab, which was apparently dedicated to the production of marijuana, and specialist police team LFO was called in to dismantle it.
The area remains cordoned off as police continue the search operation. No arrests have been reported so far.
The factory has stood empty for many years now. Local residents say they’ve suffered disturbance from the site for a long time. Weed plantations are said to have been destroyed in the building several times. Locals also say they have contacted the police many times before when they saw luxury cars at the property during the evening hours.
