Strangely enough, just shutting pubs at midnight hasn’t stopped a huge surge in Coronavirus cases
The Netherlands is likely to announce stricter measures in connection with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic this evening, though it is unclear whether these will apply to large cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, or also to the city of Groningen or to the provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) and Deputy PM Hugo de Jonge (CDA) will give a press conference on the Netherlands’ Coronavirus approach on Monday at 19:00. The Netherlands is now averaging about 3,000 new infections every day– with 38 people dying of the Coronavirus yesterday.
Extra new measures may be announced for large cities such as Amsterdam, where infections are rising quickly.
On Sunday ministers from the cabinet and experts from the RIVM spoke informally about the Coronavirus approach at the Catshuis. The new advance of the virus is of great concern to the cabinet, the Amsterdam-based newspaper Het Parool reports.
From Sunday evening, the corona measures in 14 of the 25 security regions have been tightened, including the province of Groningen. On Monday, the Outbreak Management Team will check whether this is sufficient.
The number of new infections and hospital and IC admissions in the Netherlands is increasing almost every day. On Sunday, 2995 new infections and 62 new hospital admissions (5 in Intensive Care), according to the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS).
A total of 617 patients are in the hospital, 127 of which are on the IC.
“The sharp increase in the number of admitted COVID patients is in line with expectations,” says Ernst Kuipers, chairman of the National Acute Care Network (LNAZ).
